The Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association (WLUFA) seeks a Labour Relations Officer (LRO).  WLUFA is a professional association and trade union for Full-time Faculty and Professional Librarians, as well as Contract Teaching Faculty and Part-time Librarians at Wilfrid Laurier University representing approximately 1100 members.

Reporting to the President of WLUFA, as well as functionally reporting to the Executive Director, the ideal candidate will have expert knowledge of labour relations jurisprudence and current issues and trends in jurisprudence that may have an impact on collective bargaining and labour relations in the post-secondary sector. The role will require representation of WLUFA members in enforcing the terms and conditions of their employment with Wilfrid Laurier University. The position requires a high degree of confidentiality, and a broad set of skills related to research and advocacy in an  academic labour relations environment.

 

Specific Duties

The position will appeal to someone who enjoys a variety of tasks, takes initiative, and exhibits wide‐ranging skills in the following areas, among others:

 

  • providing information and assistance to members regarding their Collective Agreement and issues such as tenure and promotion, academic freedom, human rights and disability accommodation, and terms and conditions of employment generally.
  • representing members in both informal and formal processes to resolve complaints and working with the Executive Director and legal counsel to process grievances and advance the interests of the Association.
  • conducting research related to collective bargaining and other matters.
  • have direct experience with a trade union or similar professional association.

  • have strong interpersonal skills
  • work well both independently and as part of a small team
  • have strong advocacy and conflict resolution skills
  • have the ability to research and analyze issues to formulate appropriate recommendations
  • have a thorough understanding of labour case law, relevant statutes, and current policies, practices, and procedures
  • have knowledge of collective bargaining, grievance handling, and labour arbitrations
  • have familiarity with post-secondary institutions
  • require strong relational skills
  • have the ability to work with people from a wide diversity of backgrounds and experience with professionalism, diplomacy, and an ethic of care

 

Hours of work:The role is advertised at 21/hrs per week.

 

Compensation: To be negotiated
