Job Description

Position: GenderCare Center Summer Intern

Department: GenderCare Center (formerly Center for Transgender Medicine & Surgery)

Schedule: Per Diem, Part time, Day (8-32hrs per week for 8-12 weeks, 264 hours max)

POSITION SUMMARY:

In 2016, BMC established the GenderCare Center (GCC).  With the unified structure, patients have a single point of contact for their care needs. We are the first center in New England to provide a comprehensive program and we are a national leader in delivery of gender affirming care. The Center’s work is deeply connected to local Transgender and Gender-Diverse (TGD) community, as we continue to collaborate with TGD organizations and community leaders across Massachusetts to provide accessible and supportive care.

This paid internship is a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a healthcare setting with an interdisciplinary team. This internship will support the Center’s program outreach, new initiatives, and administrative needs. We are looking for a candidate that has experience working with TGD communities, specifically with communities of color and low-income communities. Experience should include strong written and verbal communication skills, community outreach skills, and administrative support. We are searching for someone who has a passion for expanding the scope of and access to gender affirming healthcare. Under the supervision of the Program Manager and Patient Navigator, the intern will work across multiple areas with the Center’s core staff, clinicians, surgeons, and community leaders

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

The 2025 intern will focus primarily on the design and implementation of a patient journey mapping project with the end result of providing both a visual and written representation of all patient experiences across the GCC. A patient journey map is a tool used to help providers better understand their patient’s needs in order to drive efficiencies when serving them. A patient journey map meticulously covers prolonged, multi-channel, and multi-platform user experiences taking place when patients seek to achieve their personal health goals with a particular healthcare provider. The aim of the project is to provide GCC with information to help staff to better understand and align around solving known problems, identifying unknown challenges, understanding areas of success, and removing barriers to patients’ care.

The intern position is exposed to sensitive information, as such this role requires a high degree of initiative, discretion, and confidentiality.

Responsibilities may include the following (but will be determined upon intern’s interests and center’s needs at the time):

  • Direct patient contact in the peer support and community outreach setting

  • Assist with scheduling and preparations for project meetings
