Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Equipment Operator II will work individually or  with a crew performing tasks related to raised markers work. The incumbent is primarily responsible for working on a raised  marker crew, operating a variety of equipment identified as Category 1 and Category 2. The incumbent will be required to work  overtime, irregular shifts/alternate work schedules including nights, holidays and weekends, shift changes due to operational  needs. May be loaned to other crews District wide as well as out of town work locations.

Working Conditions

Position located at District7 in Ventura County - Special Crews.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and/or snow. The scheduling of the work days is at the discretion of Region Management. May be scheduled to work the night shift as needed to meet operational needs and with proper advance notice as per Bargaining Unit 12 Memorandum of Understanding. May work scheduled and/or emergency overtime due to callback, storms, special work projects, or to meet operational needs. Overtime will be assigned per the Bargaining Unit 12 Memorandum of Understanding.

Personal safety requirements include but are not limited to (as per Injury and Illness Prevention Program):
  • Appropriate footwear in good and sturdy condition must be worn.
  • Either long or short-sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans or a safety vest must be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
  • Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
  • Provided safety gear: hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirators, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the department.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

  • The position requires a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.
  • This classification requires a valid and unrestricted California Class A driver's license with tanker (N) endorsement.

  • Possession of P (Passenger/Bus) and H (Hazardous Materials) endorsements.
